Cipro Black Box Warning

Market Name: Cipro

Generic Name: Ciprofloxacin

Cipro is an anti-bacterial agent approved for the treatment of a wide range of urinary tract infections, sinus or bronchial infections, infectious diarrhea, typhoid fever, inhalational anthrax, infections of the prostate gland, and some sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea. Additionally, some doctors prescribe Cipro for certain serious ear infections, tuberculosis, and some of the infections common in people with AIDS.

Cipro should not be administered with certain drugs that are metabolized by the enzyme it inhibits, including theophylline, methylxanthines, and tizanidine. In combination, these drugs could lead to significant pharmacodynamic side effects. A black box warning was added to Cipro’s packaging by the FDA in November of 2005.
