Dilaudid (hydromorphone), indicated for relief of moderate to severe pain, is a Schedule II controlled narcotic substance with a high risk of dependence and criminal diversion. When taken in combination with other narcotics or alcohol, Dilaudid may cause sever respiratory depression, sometimes leading to death.

A black box warning was added to Dilaudid's labeling by the FDA in June of 2006.
