Fortamet Black Box Warning

Market Name: Fortamet

Generic Name: Metformin HCl

Fortamet (Metformin) is used in combination with insulin for treatment of type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes. Studies have shown that Fortamet can increase the risk of developing lactic acidosis, which may be life-threatening. Patients with heart and/or kidney disease will be at a higher risk of developing lactic acidosis.

A black box warning was added to Fortamet's prescribing information by the FDA in February of 2006.
