Norvir Black Box Warning

Generic Name: Ritonavir capsules

Norvir is one of a group of drugs known as protease inhibitors, and is used for the treatment of HIV and AIDS. Norvir works by preventing T-Cells that have been infected by HIV from producing new HIV.

The FDA added a black box warning to Norvir’s prescribing information in November of 2005, advising patients of the danger of taking PDE5 inhibitors (sildenafil, vardenafil, tadalafil) for erectile dysfunction in combination with Norvir. It also lists the antifungal Voriconazole as a drug that may cause side effects when prescribed with Norvir.
