Trasylol Black Box Warning

Market Name: Trasylol

Generic Name: Aprotinin Inj.

Trasylol is an injectable proteinase inhibitor harvested from bovine lung and used during coronary bypass surgery to prevent excess blood loss and eliminate the need for transfusion. Because Trasylol is administered after patients are under general anesthesia, they may be unaware that they have been given the drug.

After cardiac surgery, several cases of kidney failure were observed, prompting the FDA to issue a black box warning for Trasylol in December of 2006. Several studies have found that Trasylol injection nearly doubles the incidence of kidney failure.
