NuvaRing Birth Control
NuvaRing is a form of birth control that serves as an alternative to oral medication and the birth control patch. Approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2001, NuvaRing is a vaginal ring that releases progesterone and estrogen in a three-week cycle before it is removed for the fourth week.
NuvaRing was originally manufactured by Organon USA, a company purchased by Schering Plough in November 2007. This consolidation makes Schering Plough liable for any damages caused by Organon USA's defective drugs.
NuvaRing Side Effects: Blood Clots and Stroke
Several lawsuits have been filed against Schering Plough due to the potentially life-threatening side effects of NuvaRing. One report claimed a New Jersey woman died after developing a NuvaRing-induced blood clot.
Other reports claim that NuvaRing side effects include heart attack and breast cancer.
Recent research has found links between hormonal contraceptives and an increased risk for blood clotting and stroke, particularly the newest generation of hormonal contraceptives. On behalf of 100,000 consumers, the FDA is petitioning to recall all oral contraceptives that contain the deogestrel molecule, an element believed to cause blood clots.
