Prempro

Prempro, manufactured by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, is a prescription hormone replacement drug.  It combines the hormone estrogen and progestin, and has been linked to increased risks of cancer and heart disease in post-menopausal women.  Prempro is used to treat hot flashes, night sweats and other menopausal symptoms. The Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) began a study regarding the side effects of Prempro and discovered increased risks of myocardial infraction, strokes, invasive breast cancer, pulmonary emboli and deep vein thrombosis in postmenopausal women using the drug.

Due to the risk of these potentially fatal side effects, Prempro is considered a defective drug.   Often drug companies are negligent and do not fully inform doctors and patients about these side effects. Wyeth Pharmaceuticals may be required to compensate individuals who have suffered any of these side effects due to taking Prempro. If you have experienced any disease or illness due to taking Prempro, you should contact Aylstock, Witkin, Kreis & Overholtz at (877) 810-4808 to learn more about your legal rights and the possibility of compensation.

Side Effects of Prempro

The WHI’s study compared the differences between 8,506 women taking Prempro and 8,102 taking a placebo before being halted prematurely due to the risk-benefit balance established by the WHI becoming unfavorable.  Preliminary data was analyzed and a report published in the Journal of the American Medical Association illustrated that the postmenopausal women using Prempro showed a 29% increase in heart attacks, a 22% increase in total cardiovascular disease and a 26% increase in breast cancer versus the placebo takers.

Drug manufacturers have a responsibility to ensure their products are safe for public consumption. Wyeth Pharmaceutical’s disregard for their consumers’ well-being has made them potentially liable for any occurrences of breast cancer or heart disease facilitated by taking Prempro.
