Serevent

Serevent is a prescription pharmaceutical drug intended to treat bronchospasms, or the sudden narrowing of a person’s airways, associated with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, Serevent has been shown to cause a number of serious and dangerous side effects, including severe asthma attack and death.

Because of these severe side effects, Serevent is considered to be a defective drug. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA)  now requires a “black box” warning on the drug’s label to alert patients to the risk of suffering a fatal asthma attack as a result of use. However, Serevent had been used for several years by patients prior to the “black box” warning now required on the drug’s label. As a result, many patients who were prescribed Serevent may have not been aware of its dangerous side effects, and many have been needlessly injured by this defective drug.

The manufacturer of Serevent, GlaxoSmithKline, was negligent and failed to properly inform physicians and patients of these dangers. They waited until the FDA required the “black box warning” before truly informing the patients and physicians of the risks associated with their defective drug. Victims who have been injured by Serevent may be entitled to receive compensation for their injures.

Serevent & Salmetrol

Serevent contains a long-acting beta2-adrenergic receptor agonist  (LABA) drug called salmeterol. Salmeterol-based drugs are intended to treat the symptoms associated with asthma and COPD (wheezing, coughing and chest tightness) by causing bronchial dilation through the relaxation of smooth muscle in the airway passages. This relaxation is supposed to reduce the breathing difficulty associated with asthma. However, Salmetrol-based drugs have been linked with an increased risk of death resulting from a severe asthma attack. Salmetrol, as with other LABA types drugs such as Advair, are known to promote, without warning, bronchial inflammation and sensitivity. It is this sudden, unexpected inflammation that leads to the fatal asthma attacks.

Serevent Deaths and Serevent Side Effects

Research has shown that Serevent is linked with an increased risk of causing asthmatics to suffer a fatal asthma attack.  In addition to the most severe side effect described above, fatal asthma attack, Serevent has a number of other side effects, including headache, sweating, vomiting or nausea, diarrhea, insomnia, and dry mouth.

Serevent Lawsuits

GlaxoSmithKline was negligent and failed to properly inform these patients and has an obligation to properly compensate patients and their families for injures sustained while taking Serevent.

If you or a loved one has been injured as a result of using Serevent, then you may be eligible for compensation. Drug manufacturers are required by law to ensure that their products are safe and effective before introducing them to the marketplace for general consumption. Failure to adequately inform consumers of the risks associated with use of their drugs can be viewed as negligent and grounds for personal injury litigation.
