FDA Issues Warning After Research Links Spiriva to Stroke and Heart Attack
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is urging consumers to exhibit caution when using Spiriva, an inhaled bronchodilator that is used to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The warning follows reports that Spiriva increases the risk of stroke, heart attack and other cardiovascular side effects.
Pharmaceutical developer Boehringer Ingelheim is investigating the claims of Spiriva side effects, and research is slated to be completed in the near future. The study combines existing research with the results of a new four-year study to offer more comprehensive information.
Cardiovascular Side Effects of Spiriva
The FDA warning follows 29 patient studies completed over several years. The studies concluded that 2 out of every 1,000 patients taking Spiriva suffered a stroke. Another study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association discovered that the drug has been linked to an increased risk of heart attack and death.
Patients who are taking Spiriva should immediately stop its use and contact their physicians as soon as possible if they demonstrate any of the following cardiovascular side effects:
- Chest pain
- Double vision
- Lightheadedness
- Nausea
- Profuse sweating
- Severe headache
- Shortness of breath
- Slurred speech
- Sudden loss of coordination
- Sudden onset of confusion or disorientation
- Sudden weakness or paralysis of one side of the body
- Vomiting
If patients experience two or more of the aforementioned symptoms, it is important to seek immediate medical attention, as this could signify a heart attack or stroke.
